Action on short-term rental legislation is expected this month when Michigan lawmakers head back to Lansing from spring break.
The Berrien County Board of Commissioners was briefed by Lansing consultant Mike Krombeen this week. He said the main bill in an STR package getting a hearing is from state Representative Joey Andrews.
Krombeen says the bill is very different from a previous bill pushed by realtors groups.
“I think what we’re likely to see at the hearing here shortly after spring break is a lot of support from local units of government, maybe some tepid support from organizations like the CVBs and restaurants and lodging about how, ‘Hey, we’d like to see some of those dollars go here or there, or here’s our concern about this.” And then probably opposition from groups like the realtors association.”
Krombeen said the legislation will create a state registry of STRs as well as a local option for a 6% tax to be applied to STRs. The money would stay local so communities can recoup costs associated with short term rentals.
Krombeen predicts support from local governments, lukewarm support from hospitality businesses, and opposition from realtors.
